A woman who is one of Bridgeport Hospital's first female African-American nurses was honored Wednesday during a Black History Month event.
Jean Williams says she walked into the hospital in 1959 looking for any job she could get and was hired as a nurse on the spot.
She says she never imagined that she would put on a new nursing cap and be recognized for her accomplishments 60 years later.
Williams retired between the late 1960s and early 1970s. She says several of her grandchildren are planning to become nurses.
