Police say three women died Monday evening after the SUV they were riding in crashed into a pole in Mount Sinai.
According to police, a 2010 black Jeep Liberty left the road as it traveled north on Mount Sinai-Coram Road. That is when it slammed into a utility pole, overturned, caught fire and exploded around 11 p.m.
Police say the driver and two passengers in the SUV were killed. According to police, the women range in age between 23 and 25 years old.
Witnesses say because of the intensity of the flames and the downed live wires, it was impossible to get to the car.
Police say a retired FDNY firefighter witnessed the vehicle strike a pole and tried to save the occupants. However, he was pushed back by flames and the electricity.
Officials say there is no evidence of any kind of alcohol, texting or any other vehicles being involved at this time. They also do not believe the vehicle was driving erratically prior to the crash, but it is still under investigation.
Witnesses say they did not see any deer in the road at the time of the crash.
They say the road is closed as crews work to repair the broken utility pole, and that the crash and fire of the explosion knocked out power in most of the neighborhood.
Police are asking anyone with more information on the crash to call them at 1-800-220-TIPS.
