Five people were injured after the car they were riding in slammed into a building on Main Street in Bridgeport.

Authorities say the car was backing up in a parking lot when it accelerated into the structure. The fire department reports that the vehicle is totaled and the building is facing significant structural damage.

All of the individuals in the car were transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

Officials say the accident could have been much more detrimental had it occurred during the week, when people are in the building.
