Arch Street School move concerns parents
Some local parents say they?re concerned for their children?s safety after they learned about plans to move an alternative education school into a building with a preschool.
The plan calls for Byram?s Arch Street School to move into 40 Gold Street in the Byram section of Greenwich. The proposed move came about after the Arch Street School lost its lease at its current location. The Gold Street location also houses the Pat-a-Cake Playschool, which concerns parents with students enrolled at that school.
Parents say they are worried that their children may be sharing a hallway and a bathroom with high school students. They say that they?ve heard of kids getting arrested or expelled for drugs and then being transferred to the Arch Street School.
Concerned parent JoAnne Martin says some parents may pull their kids out of the preschool because they don?t want them mixing with the alternative education students.
?Babies tend to do what they see, say what they hear and we don't want them growing up in this environment,? Martin said.
However, Arch School students do not agree. Matt Zeh just graduated from the alternative education school and says people have the wrong impression about the students.
?This is wrong,? Zeh said. ?We?re not going to beat up toddlers. They think we?re going to blow smoke in their faces, and we?re not like that.?
The Greenwich School District says they're still negotiating the lease and haven't been able to find another suitable space for the Arch Street School.
The move could happen as early as this fall, and the preschool says it's now looking for a new location.
