Businesses join to form safe haven zone
Businesses in District 12 are joining forces to create a so-called safe haven zone to help residents in need.
City Councilman Andy King says participating storefronts, like delis and sandwich shops, will help people find a safe refuge when they're in trouble.
One problem the councilman says is troubling in the city is when teen girls go missing.
King says 14 girls have been reported missing this year in the city.
News 12 The Bronx has covered the cases of two of them, 15-year-old Miracle Mann, who has since been found, and 16-year-old Ashley Bissal, who remains missing.
"Every other week, girls between the ages of 12 and roughly 16 or 17 are vanishing from our streets," King says.
Participating businesses will display a special decal in their front windows to alert anyone who may be in trouble or the victim of a crime that they can go inside for help.
Six businesses so far have signed up to participate, including RK Super Heroes on Gun Hill Road. "This area has a lot of violence, so we do whatever we can like break up fights," says Anthony Saitta.
The safety zone is for anyone who may be in trouble.
