Gov. Chris Christie conditionally vetoes a pair of bills that would have allowed school districts to merge their sports teams.

Christie signed a large variety of bills on his last day in office, but chose to ignore the high school sports one.

Supporters of the bill said that it would allow schools that were not able to field a complete team merge so that more students could play.

But officials with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association opposed the bills because they said that it could pave the way for “super teams.”

“We remain hopeful that the bills will not become law and the rules of high school sports continue – as it has been for 99 years -- to be made by member schools,” the NJSIAA said in a statement.
