Relatives are demanding answers about a man's death inside a Flatbush Stop & Shop supermarket from which employees apparently believed he was shoplifting.
Ralph Nimmons, 51, died after going to the grocery store on Saturday. Witness Evans Pierre says store employees believed Nimmons was shoplifting and tackled him.
"They beat him down, put their knee on his back, on his neck," Pierre says.
Nimmons' uncle, Bonezlee Nimmons, says the man had a bad heart condition and that no one listened to his pleas for help. Standing beside his lawyer, he said they want Stop & Shop to be penalized.
Attorney Scott Rynecki says he's been in touch with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office to investigate exactly what transpired at the supermarket.
"We continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials to ensure that the facts pertaining to this incident are fully and accurately determined," Stop & Shop said in a statement.
News 12 specifically asked Stop & Shop about its policy when it comes to people suspected of shoplifting, but no response has been given.
