A family is searching for a relative who went missing more than a month ago in the Bronx.
The family of Daryl Tunstall, 44, says he has been missing since April 2 and that he suffers from schizophrenia. He was last seen at 2330 Bronx Park East.
"The public has a tendency to think that people with mental illness -- schizophrenia, whatever the case is -- are threatening, but they're not," says his sister, Deborah Rodriguez Cooke. "Daryl is a big teddy bear."
Relatives believe several things could have caused Tunstall to leave: the anniversary of his mother's death, whom he took care of, the murder of his nephew in Soundview Park or the murder of his father, a retired NYPD officer, in North Carolina.
Tunstall disappeared before in 2009, but he was found at a shelter. His family has checked shelters, hospitals, friends' houses and morgues to no avail.
"It's not like him," says his aunt, Otilia Edmonds. "We're usually able to find him, and he's usually close to his family. We don't know if something upset him or if he's lost."
They are hoping for the safe return of Tunstall, who is a father. They have made fliers with Tunstall's picture and identifying information. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and approximately 250 pounds.
Anyone with information about Tunstall's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
