First major snowstorm of the season hits CT
State police asked people to stay off the roads Thursday night as the wintry weather created a mess of slush, ice and snow.
A light snow started to fall around 11:30 a.m., with heavier snow starting shortly thereafter. The snow slowly turned into sleet, freezing rain and slush throughout the afternoon. Meteorologists said the ground was so cold, the snow and freezing rain immediately stuck, which caused dangerous conditions on the road.
Roads were backed up throughout the day due to the treacherous conditions. There were also several accidents on major highways.
Snow plows were out as well, trying to clear roadways to make conditions a little less dangerous for drivers.
Bridgeport?s new Mayor Bill Finch declared a state of emergency in the Park City.
Motorists, who did venture out, were urged to allow extra time to get to their destinations.
Meanwhile, grocery and hardware stores were busy Thursday morning. Many residents headed out to get supplies such as shovels and salt. Others stocked up on food and water.
