Hardware store gives tips for cold if power goes out
Local hardware stores say now's the time to stock up and prepare in case a winter storm knocks power out at your home.
Scott Pesavento, owner of Hemlock Hardware in Fairfield, says the first thing to do is transfer food from the refrigerator to a cooler to make sure it doesn't spoil.
Pesavento also says to get plenty of firewood if you have a fireplace and to grab some battery-operated lamps.
He says more and more people are buying generators, but users need to be careful. He says improper ventilation is a common cause of carbon monoxide poisoning, so users should keep the generator several feet away from the house and never in the garage.
Kerosene lamps are illegal in Fairfield. Pesavento says to keep those outside as well, if they're legal where you live.
