A neighborhood in the Bronx has one of the highest rates of hepatitis C in the city, health officials say.

A new study from the New York City Health Department found that the Hunts Point-Mott Haven area one of four areas in the city where the chronic virus is widespread.

Doctors say if left untreated, hepatitis C can lead to death. Recently, a cure was found, and even though it is expensive, many medical providers will help pay for it.

However, doctors say symptoms are hard to detect, so it is important to get tested.

"Hepatitis C testing is easy, it's available. Health care providers all over can help test for it. It's important to make no assumptions," says Jason Leider, of Jacobi Medical Center. "You should get tested at least once, especially if you're in that baby boomer generation from 1945 to 1965."

Hepatitis C is an viral infection that attacks the liver. It is spread by contaminated blood.
