The town of Oyster Bay voted to re-bid the repair contracts for the Hicksville train station parking garage after construction bids to replace defective concrete came in more than $2 million over estimates.
Officials say they hope to keep the costs down.
“I will continue my commitment to our taxpayers to get this garage done properly without spending an exorbitant amount of the taxpayers’ dollars,” says Town Supervisor Joe Saladino.
Commuters worry that this latest delay will push back the closure of the garage into the early fall when parking in Hicksville is typically busier than it is in the quieter summer months.
The town says it hopes to get new bids in by the end of July that are closer to the estimated $13.2 million repair cost. The town also will need about $1 million to pay for shuttle buses and temporary parking for commuters at the nearby former Sears store.
The town hopes to have the new construction bids approved by its next meeting on July 24. Officials say repairs are expected to take 90 days to complete.
