Inspectors patrol CT highways for unsafe trucks
Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles inspectors and state police are on the lookout for potentially dangerous tractor-trailers as part of a nationwide program called Roadcheck 2007.
During the three days of Roadcheck 2007, trucks have been pulled over into rest stops and inspected for safety problems.
Inspector Ron Barnard of the state DMV Commercial Vehicle Safety Division is one of the officials performing the road checks. ?As we go along, we're looking for trucks doing any unsafe lane changes?no turn signals,? Barnard said.
Barnard pulled over truck drivers hauling food from Bridgeport Thursday. After the one-hour inspection, they had a long list of violations, including a steering problem. Their truck was put out of service and towed away.
Another trucker, Tom Dehner, was pulled over while transporting bottled water from Maine to New Jersey. He said he was aware of the road check program, but had never been pulled over himself. He nevertheless supported the idea. ?I think it?s a great idea,? Dehner said. ?It gets all the problems or most of the problems off the road.?
Roadcheck 2007 ends Thursday at midnight, but Connecticut State Police representatives said they have inspectors and troopers trained to do the job full-time.
