Police departments across the country are doing their part to help a boy from New Jersey who is battling Leukemia.
Warren County 4-year-old Grayson Schmalz was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November. His family says that he has dreams of becoming a police officer one day. His aunt Renee Schmalz reached out to a North Plainfield police officer with the hopes of getting Grayson a police patch.
Officer Taras Bogutskiy went above and beyond and reached out to police departments around the state and the country to get the boy patches.
"I think it's gonna make him stronger and I think he's going to pull through with treatment,” Bogutskiy says. “Just going to have something to look at on the wall every single day and make him happy.”
Patches came from as far away as the Honolulu Police Department.
“When Taras showed me the picture of it, I was just amazed by it,” Renee Schmalz says. “I really can't wait to give it to him."
They are hoping to collect more patches for Grayson before Christmas. Patches can be mailed to the North Plainfield Police Department.
