Lawmaker pushes for Bunnell's Pond safety measures
One lawmaker is trying to do what he canto stop another tragedy from taking place at Bridgeport's Bunnell's Pond.
Four people, including three children, drowned when the van they were in rolled into the water on the Fourth of July.
State Sen. Bill Finch (D-Bridgeport) is asking the state for $100,000 toward safety improvements. Finch is suggesting the installation of wooden safety guard rails and the elimination of parking near the pond. He says he wants firefighters to get scuba gear and training, so they can immediately get involved if a similar accident occurs.
Both the fire department and Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi say they're on board. Fabrizi says the city has to make sure it has the money to make the changes.
The parks department says it is working on placing large boulders on the grass near the water to prevent cars from going in the pond. They could be in place within the next two weeks.
