Connecticut lawmakers met with students across Connecticut Monday to discuss gun violence and school safety.
West Hartford High School students and gun control advocates met with Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy to voice their concerns.
"They want a say, they want action and an end to complicity from Congress," says Sen. Blumenthal. "It may not happen right away, but the students we're seeing in classrooms, in demonstrations, walkouts, walk-ins, all are showing the way for this social movement."
Meanwhile, Rep. Elizabeth Esty met with Cheshire High School students in response to the Florida school shooting. The discussion comes after the House recently approved a gun-related school safety bill that the congresswoman co-sponsored.
The bill would invest in programs to train school staff, students and law enforcement to identify signs of potential violence and prevent it before it happens.
Connecticut parents, school administrators and faculty have been pushing for common sense gun laws and increased school safety. Towns such as Westport and Redding have considered adding school resource officers to their districts.
The New Fairfield community will also meet tonight to discuss long-term school safety measures.
The district reportedly added police officers to its lower-level schools for the rest of the year in response to the Parkland, Fla. shooting.
