Gov. Dannel Malloy announced today at Wilbur Cross High School that graduation rates for high schoolers in the state are at a record high.
Statewide, the rate of kids graduating high school has increased by 5 percent since the governor took office to almost 88 percent and the biggest jump has been in struggling districts like Bridgeport.
The governor specifically visited Wilbur Cross High School because it has seen some of the biggest improvements in the state. He says that courses like culinary arts are part of the reason why more students are choosing to graduate.
"Literally, thousands of people who would not have received a high school diploma seven or eight years ago have, in fact, and are receiving those diplomas," said Gov. Malloy.
Alliance Districts, which have traditionally struggled, have seen a 12 percent increase in high school graduations.
There are still fights over money for those school systems, though.
