A massive fire broke out Wednesday at the old AGI Rubber Company building on Stratford Avenue in Bridgeport.
Authorities say a passing police officer noticed and reported the flames around 4 p.m. Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene.
The flames were so large that they could be seen from Interstate 95. Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says thick, black smoke was obscuring traffic on the nearby bridge.
Fire Chief Richard Thode says crews worked diligently to contain the blaze, even using brackish water from the Pequonnock River at one point. They would continue monitoring for hot spots.
No injuries were reported.
The old AGI Rubber building has been the site of numerous fires in the past.
