A Montclair State University professor will take to the streets Saturday to raise money for some students in need.
Associate Nursing Professor Andrew Scanlon can often be found out and about riding his bike.
“I get up at 5 a.m. I ride 40 to 60 miles in the morning, come to work. I do a couple of other rides, maybe into the city and back, which is about 60 miles return,” he says.
Scanlon says that he will take on the challenge of biking the entire length of New Jersey Saturday to raise money for his students.
"Start from Ringwood, come here [to Montclair] which is about 30 miles. We’ll do a lap around Montclair State with faculty, other staff and students. From there I head towards Princeton. The next stop will be just outside Princeton, West Windsor,” he says.
He will then head to Little Egg Harbor and then all the way to Cape May. The money raised during the ride will help stock the Red Hawk Pantry – a food pantry which helps students in need.
“It was eye-opening for me, coming from Australia, to hear that students are in class hungry and they shouldn’t have to worry about whether [they are] buying books or buying food,” Scanlon says.
The Red Hawk Pantry was established in 2016 after a student survey determined that there was a need for it on campus. The pantry carries food and personal hygiene items.
Scanlon says that he hopes that his act if service will inspire his students to give back where they see a need.
“That’s one of the mottos that we have here at the School of Nursing at Montclair State, to think global but act local,” he says.
More information about Scanlon’s ride can be found HERE.
