Morris County OEM urges caution on roads as temp drop could bring ice
The Morris County Office of Emergency Management is asking residents to stay off the roads as long as possible during this weekend's storm.
Authorities say they are preparing for the storm and any potential emergencies that may occur. A salt barn in Morris County was a busy place Friday and Saturday, as workers prepared the roads for snow and ice.
Jeff Paul, director of OEM in Morris County, says they are concerned about the freezing rain that is expected and potential refreeze on roadways overnight.
"We have a very sophisticated program but Mother's Nature's tricky and when you have ice," says Morris County Sheriff James Gannon.
Morris County's 911 dispatch center says they are prepared for a surge in calls, ranging from traffic accidents to medical emergencies to traffic lights that are out.
They say that on average, 2,500 or 3,000 911 calls are received per day.
Meetings were held throughout Saturday morning with local mayors and freeholders. The county also held a conference call Friday which included more than 80 people, including the Red Cross and power companies.
Some 350 cots are on standby if the worst happens. In that case, a portable floor is at the ready to cover the floor of the county ice rink and serve as a shelter.
