Mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus have been found in Stamford.
The infected mosquitoes were discovered at a pond at Sleepy Hollow on July 30. The area in which the mosquitoes were found is not an isolated one, and people who live there say they are worried about the development.
Stamford Health Director Dr. Johnny Lee says it?s critical that residents protect themselves from mosquitoes. He says residents should avoid being outside during dusk and dawn. In addition, Dr. Lee suggests wearing protective clothing and insect repellent that contains DEET.
No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Stamford this year. However, there are two people in the state of Connecticut who were diagnosed with the virus last month.
Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy says he is aware of the situation. He says city officials may use larvicide on the pond, but it is too soon to tell if they will take that approach.
