The Humane Society of the United States is celebrating National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week this week.

The week is used to honor animal shelters and their protection of animals.

According to the ASPCA, nearly 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters in the United States every year.

Each year, about 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized.

While over 60 percent of American households have pets, only about 20 percent of them are adopted from shelters.

Even if you’re not in the market for a pet, shelters usually are looking for volunteers or allow you to donate supplies like food and toys.
