A national network outage with an external network service provider temporarily halted license processing at DMV locations in New York Monday.
The outage came as the DMV started extended hours across the state.
The DMV announced it would open one hour earlier to deal with the long lines that started after the Green Light Law was passed. The law allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver license.
The Bethpage DMV had extended its hours and provided return tickets to customers so that they can leave and come back at a specified time prior to the outage.
A DMV employee told the crowd that the system was unable to process any transactions. He said that they were not letting anyone, even people with appointments, inside the DMV during the outage.
The New York state DMV tweets originally suggested that the issue was isolated to its Huntington location.
The state's DMV then tweeted, "The external network service provider has resolved the issues affecting DMV transactions, and our offices are able to process transactions now. We appreciate everyone's patience."
People on line at the Bethpage DMV received new return slips after the outage was resolved.
The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, which oversees the network, told News 12 in a statement, "During this outage, there was no ability to process messages that support transactions of driver licenses and motor vehicle titles. This prevented most states from issuing/renewing driver licenses and issuing vehicle titles during that time... AAMVA continues to monitor the network and will conduct a full analysis to determine the root cause of the outage."
Besides the extra hour during the week, the DMV is now opening on Saturdays and has hired 320 new employees. The appointments on Saturdays are available at seven locations, including Garden City and Medford.
The Green Light Law went into effect mid-December.
