New clues uncover details in Stamford riot
Stamford police released a recording from a 911 call as well as surveillance video Tuesday from a riot between police and residents from a housing complex.
About two weeks ago, police say an officer chased a suspect who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. When the officer detained the suspect the residents became disorderly, spitting and throwing rocks, police say.
According to the emergency phone call an officer yelled, "code 30," which signifies that an officer is in a life-threatening emergency and needs backup.
In the surveillance video, a large crowd of people followed the chase, and the police officer is outnumbered.
Residents say the police responded with excessive force.
Stamford police disagree.
"I think it was an unfortunate situation, had the suspect simply surrendered himself without a resistance it all could have been avoided, but the bottom line is, it was a very difficult situation for the officer to be in, he handled it quite well and we're very proud of him," said Lt. Sean Cooney.
Three policemen were injured and five people were arrested during the incident. Police say no complaints have been filed against the department and they routinely review their response to incidents.
