An off-duty New Haven police captain was shot multiple times while responding to a shooting Monday, according to the city's mayor.
Capt. Anthony Duff was shot in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street after he found two men involved in a shooting around 9:23 p.m. One man died in the shooting, according to authorities.
Duff was off-duty at the time and was in the area when he heard a report of shots fired through ShotSpotter. Officials say he called for backup, saying he was shot.
Duff is recovering after his surgery Monday night.
Police are searching for the suspect.
Duff was named as the department's public information officer in January and has been on the force for 24 years, according to the New Haven Register.
"Whenever you saw him, on duty or off duty, he was the same. You see him in uniform or out of uniform, he was the same person," said Paul Hawkins, who worked with Duff on the neighborhood block watch. "All you can do is pray for him. Pray for him and the family."
Police say the suspect could be up to 6 feet tall. They say he's a black male with possibly braided hair. Anyone with information is asked to call the New Haven Police Department at 203-946-6316.
