A Morris County woman is doing her part in the ongoing quest to avoid plastic shopping bags.
Ina Braun, of Jefferson Township, has been going to farmer’s markets across the county and turns old t-shirts into reusable shopping bags, free of charge.
Anyone can bring a shirt to her booths that she sets up, and she’ll make a bag using her Serger sewing machine. She has done it farmer’s markets in Denville, Madison, Rivervale and West Milford. She says that she does it because she feels like in the face of widespread plastic pollution and climate change, everyone needs to do what they can.
“I needed something tangible. I needed to get out of my head of thinking about these things. And you have to do something. It's not about being on social media about it. It's about doing it,” Braun says.
Braun says that she would like to see her efforts go nationwide.
“I have a dream that next summer every farmer's market in the United States has someone making t-shirt bags. That's my dream…No more plastic bags,” she says.
Braun will set up shop at the West Milford farmer’s market Aug. 21, the Rivervale market on Aug. 22 and will be at the Wayne farmer’s market on Aug. 24.
