Police say they arrested five people who ran a drug-trafficking ring out of Long Beach.

The Nassau District Attorney's Office says a 14-month investigation dubbed "Operation Beach Sweep" led to the arrests of Robert Gause, Carlos Andujar, Rodney Coward, Ronnie Sutton and Harold Chestnut.

Investigators say Gause received drugs from Andujar, an alleged member of the Latin Kings street gang. Prosecutors say the other suspects sold drugs to local users.

During the bust, investigators say they recovered heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, Xanax, a loaded revolver and a shotgun.

"These drugs lead to both fatal and non-fatal overdoses, placing our residents and their children at great risk which we cannot tolerate," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said in a statement.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said she's proud to be "able to make a significant dent in the flow of drugs into Long Beach and surrounding communities." She went on to say that operations like this are responsible for "dismantling the drug trafficking networks that are fueling Long Island's opioid epidemic."

The suspects are facing charges of criminal possession or sale of a controlled substance. One is facing conspiracy. Their maximum sentences range from 9 to 24 years, if convicted.
