A West Babylon man is charged with manslaughter after police say he intentionally ran down a young father from Wyandanch and then fled the scene following an early morning fight in a pub parking lot.
Police say a fight broke out in the parking lot of the BrewHaus Pub on North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday.
That's when they say the suspect, 41-year-old Shatik Canady got into his car and intentionally struck 28-year-old Kawon Williams, of Wyandanch.
Williams, a husband and father of three, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
News 12 spoke to Canady as he was being led out of the police precinct Sunday morning following his arrest. He claimed that he was trying to intervene in the fight, and he also claimed that he had no idea that someone had been struck by his car.
"I was trying to protect someone else. I don't know why they were fighting," Canady said. Asked if he ran the victim over, Canady replied, "I didn't think so."
