Stamford police have made an arrest in the city's first homicide of the year, less than two weeks after a New York man was shot in his car in the city's South End.
Rashad Sellers, 27, was arrested Friday in the fatal shooting of Stephon Walthrust, of Queens. Walthrust was sitting in his car on Garden Street on March 30 when he was shot multiple times, according to police.
"Since the time of the incident, investigators have been working very hard to try to determine what connections Mr. Walthrust had with our community," says Lt. Tom Scanlon.
Police say sources led them to Sellers, who is from West Haven and now lives in Bridgeport. They confirm the two men knew each other but aren't commenting on the motive. After conducting surveillance on Sellers for the past week, police were able to arrest him around 6:30 a.m. thanks to a collaborative effort with other agencies.
Sellers was arrested this morning by SWAT members as he walked into a deli in Norwalk, officials say. Police say they'd been following Sellers for a few days and noticed he typically stopped here.
Sellers now faces a murder charge. Police say Sellers was arrested without incident. He's being held on $1 million bond and is set to be arraigned Monday.
Police are crediting cooperation between multiple departments for the arrest.
"We were working with Bridgeport police officers, West Haven police officers and also we had Norwalk officers embedded with us for the takedown on East Avenue, so there were a lot of different agencies that were involved and there was a lot of coordination and we're very happy that today went off without a hitch," says Scanlon.
