Police: Darien man attacked for refusing to give last cigarette
Three Greenwich men allegedly assaulted a Darien man who refused to give them his last cigarette as bars were closing in Stamford Saturday night, according to police.
They say they arrested Richard Stafford, Eric Macken and William Rosato Saturday after the trio approached the victim and his girlfriend, who were waiting for an Uber car at the corner of Bedford and Broad streets downtown.
Police say that the suspects assaulted the male victim when he refused to give them his last cigarette, and then they allegedly pushed his girlfriend and left her with a bruise on her face.
Video provided by a News 12 viewer who says they witnessed some of the attack appears to show the victim get up off his knees and back away from the crowd. Police have not confirmed whether the video shows the same incident.
One of the suspects allegedly knocked the victim to the ground with a punch to the face before the others began kicking him while he was down, police say. Good Samaritans broke up the attack before police arrived.
Officials say that at that time of night, when area bars are closing down, there are increased police patrols.
The Darien Daily Voice is reporting that Stafford and Rosato were both football players at the Brunswick School. Stafford reportedly went on to play at the University of Massachusetts last fall.
The paper also says Macken was formerly a hockey player at Greenwich High School.
