Investigators combed through a wooded area in Roosevelt Saturday after police found human remains there on Friday.
As News 12 reported, police found the remains after receiving a tip earlier in the week. The body has not yet been identified, but investigators announced that the remains belong to a male.
Lilian Oliva says she is fearing the worst. She says her 19-year-old son Kerin Pineda disappeared in May of 2016 shortly after getting into a fight with MS-13 gang members over a pair of sneakers.
Pineda is one of at least four young Hispanic men missing from nearby neighborhoods.
"We went to the woods to see what we can see to find anything, to find out what happened with him. But we didn't find anything," she says
As the police investigation continues, the wooded area where the remains were found and several blocks near West Greenwich Avenue and Wilbur lane are being cordoned off. Only residents are being allowed in.
Searching alongside Nassau County Police Saturday was Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of ICE that has been conducting a months-long crackdown on MS-13. The gang, police say, is responsible for the murders of teens in wooded areas of Central Islip and Massapequa.
It is not yet known how long investigators will continue to search the area. Nassau County police say they will be there for as long as it takes.
