Police released a picture of the red SUV they believe mowed down an elderly woman in Bay Shore, leaving her critically injured.
Mary Barbato, 74, remains in the hospital after undergoing surgery Wednesday. Her brother says nearly every bone in her body is broken, including her spine.
News 12 is told the 74-year-old was struck just after 6 a.m. as she was walking to her job at Suffolk Transportation Service, where she's worked for 23 years.
"She is going to make it, but she probably isn't going to be able to walk," says John Barbato. "The way she looks, it looks like he ran her over. I just hope we get him."
After Mary Barbato was hit on Moffitt Boulevard, her brother says a bus driver saw her hurt, covered her with a blanket and called 911.
Investigators says the driver took off going west on Moffitt Boulevard, then south on Brentwood Road.
John Barbato says his sister, who likes to go by Marie works as a driver's assistant, helping children with special needs on the school bus.
Officials say the SUV involved may have front-end damage.
Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
