A teenager who suffered a gunshot wound ran to nearby Brick Memorial High School for help, prompting a lockdown at the school.
Brick Township police say that the shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday on New York Avenue, just a quarter-mile away from the high school. Police say that the teen was grazed by a bullet and then ran to the school to get some help. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
The incident prompted officials to lock down Brick Memorial and two other nearby schools as a precaution during the investigation.
“Just as a precaution, we locked down the school. We locked down surrounding schools,” says Chief James Riccio. “We sent officers into the school and did a systematic search just to make sure there were no other victims.”
The lockdown ended around 4 p.m. and students were allowed to go home.
Riccio did not release much information about a possible motive for the shooting.
“We think that the intended target was not hit and this might be an isolated incident between these parties,” he says.
Police say that they are now looking for one or two suspects who may be involved in the shooting. They are also investigating if the shooting is related to a recent drive-by shooting in the area.
