Rell pleased with '07; looking forward to '08 challenges
With the year and legislative session coming to a close, Gov. Jodi Rell (R-CT) says she is pleased with the outcome of this year?s session and looks forward to the challenges of 2008.
Rell says though she is pleased with this year?s session, some issues did take longer to resolve than she had hoped. A special session was needed to finalize both the budget and bonding packages, which lead to a perception that not much was getting done.
?While (residents) may think that not a lot happened, the fact it was delayed was really to their advantage,? Rell says.
As a result of the budget surplus, property taxes were nixed. The bond package was eventually scaled back to a level both sides could accept.
In 2008, Rell plans to bring back her proposal for a municipal property tax cap. She also says it is time to reform the criminal justice system in response to the deadly Cheshire home invasion.
Looking further ahead, Rell is considering forming an exploratory committee for a re-election bid in 2010.
