Rutgers University is set to name Dr. Jonathan Holloway as its new president to succeed Robert Barchi. Holloway will be the first African American president in Rutgers history.
Dr. Holloway is currently the provost at Northwestern University. He earned degrees from Yale, where he later worked as an academic, and from Stanford University, where he was on the football team with Sen. Cory Booker, according to a published interview.
Dr. Holloway will replace 73-year-old Robert Barchi, who announced last summer that he would be stepping down as head of Rutgers' three campuses with more than 70,000 students.
Students say they hope the new president makes of point of focusing on student concerns.
“In a big school I think it's real easy for the administration to kind of just push you to the side. So, it'd be nice to have a president that cares about the concerns of students," said student Richard Mahoney.
“I think it'll make a difference by just having another voice, especially in the minority community," says Perry Christie, another Rutgers student.
“You want your administration to reflect your population and I think having a minority in that position will be really big for the student body here," says student Boez Madeus,.
Dr. Holloway is expected to be officially named as the choice for president on Tuesday, then be approved by the Rutgers governing body.
