Harendra Singh will return to the stand Monday in the corruption trial of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and former Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto.
Singh testified this week that he provided bribes, kickbacks and other goods and services to curry favor that would allow his businesses to prosper in the county and town.
Singh testified that his Bethpage restaurant HR Singleton’s, specifically a conference room in the basement, served as a sort of political hub. Singh said that a lot of hirings were made in that conference room and a neighboring office Mangano used as a campaign office.
Singh talked about what he detailed as patronage hires and said he got into the act as well, making sure friends and family members could get jobs with Nassau County. He said he witnessed talks between Venditto and Mangano about the way in which they would make sure certain members of political clubs would get jobs, either with the county or town. Singh said once instance even saw Mangano making sure his brother Rob got a job with the town of Oyster Bay.
"Singh, through his testimony, actually opened up a door and a window into how political patronage works in Nassau County and in Oyster Bay," says Newsday's Joye Brown.
