Stamford officials are mulling a plan that would raise the fine for failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk to $250.

Pedestrians currently have the right of way, but drivers frequently ignore that. So the city's transportation committee has recommended increasing the penalty, which is currently $100.

"Hopefully we can actually get some fines and some correction for some of these people who don't respect our pedestrians," says Rep. Steven Kolenberg, chairman of the committee.

If the committee approves the proposal it would still need approval from the city government for a chance at altering the existing ordinance.

Residents say stricter enforcement and higher penalties will make them feel safer walking downtown.
