Agencies representing the homeless in southwestern Connecticut ventured out Tuesday to count the number of people living on the streets.

As part of a statewide effort called the Point in Time Count, officials with the Pacific House emergency shelter in Stamford began counting the homeless across Stamford, Greenwich and Darien. Shelter officials say they're required by the federal government to conduct the survey every year.

Workers hit the streets with surveys in hand, asking the homeless their age, if they're employed and where they slept the night before. The goal of the survey is to get an actual count how many homeless are living sheltered and unsheltered.
