Top state lawmakers say a vote on the controversial topic of tolls could come in just a few days.
The plan calls for only tolling tractor-trailers on a dozen bridges, including the Saugatuck River Bridge on I-95. That toll would cost truckers $6.40 with an in-state discount.
“We feel confident that we'll have the votes,” state Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff said on News 12’s Power & Politics.
State Sen. Duff said he expects a vote next week or the following one. Tolls need 18 senators to pass.
Opposition remains fierce at the state Capitol, and there are some Democrats who say a trucks-only plan doesn't go far enough.
"I will not vote for anything with a declaration that says, 'We cannot toll cars,' because the only real solution is tolling all vehicles," says state Sen. Alex Bergstein (D-Greenwich).
Still, Duff thinks they can pull together enough "yes" votes.
Gov. Ned Lamont is holding a town hall in Westport on Sunday where he is expected to address the issue. It will take place at Bedford Middle School.
Members from the group No Tolls CT say they are boycotting the meeting.
