The Town of Stratford is deciding what to do with one of its most recognizable landmarks one year after it was destroyed in a fire.

Neighbors say before the fire that destroyed the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre last year, it represented wasted potential. They say during its time it was "booming," but then was left in disrepair.

Economic Development Director Mary Dean says they are asking residents what they would like to see happen to the area.

Dean says the overwhelming response was that this should stay a home for the arts.

It's up to the Shakespeare Property Subcommittee to draw up plans for a multiuse space and venue on the 14-acre property.

Deed restrictions placed on the Shakespeare Theatre site require Stratford to preserve at least 20% as open space and keep the entire property open to the public.
