Teen charged as adult in fatal hit-and-run crash
A teenager is out on bond after he was arrested and charged as an adult in a fatal hit-and-run crash, Greenwich police said Friday.
Andrew Schmidt, 17, of Greenwich, was arrested on Thursday and charged with evading responsibility after a fatal accident. He is accused of hitting Edward Setterberg, 43, of Cos Cob, with his vehicle as Setterberg walked on East Putnam Avenue near Hillside Road at night on April 17.
Schmidt immediately drove away, according to police. Debris was left behind, which helped lead police to the teen, and parts of his vehicle were damaged.
The accident was discussed on multiple social media accounts, which played a major role in the investigation, giving police probable cause to arrest Schmidt.
"We ended up preparing and getting signed 39 separate search warrants," said Capt. Robert Berry, of the Greenwich Police Department. "Many of those involved social media accounts."
As authorities continue to investigate the crash, police offered their condolences to the victim's family. "I can't say it's to their satisfaction," said Berry, referring to Schmidt being charged. "I don't think you could be satisfied with any aspect to this."
If convicted, Schmidt could face up to 10 years in prison. He was released on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 2.
