Two black bear sightings were reported in Westport Friday morning, officials say.
The sightings were in the Charcoal Hill Road and Easton Road parts of town.
Homeowner Joe Innamorati says that he was working from home when he saw one black bear eating sunflowers from the birdfeeder in his backyard.
Innamorati says that in the 22 years he and his wife have been living in Westport, they have seen deer in their backyard, but never a bear.
He says he called police, but by the time officers arrived, the bear was gone.
News 12 spoke with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which says that the black bear population in the state has been growing each year.
The department says it will only take action to remove bears if they are in an urban area and have no way of getting back to their normal habitat.
