Two on-duty police officers were shot in the Melrose section of the Bronx around 8 p.m. Thursday, police have confirmed.
One of the officers was shot in the head.
Officials say it happened near the Melrose Houses on East 156th Street, where there was a massive police presence.
Both officers were taken to Lincoln Hospital. The NYPD tweeted that their injuries were not life threatening.
It happened within the jurisdiction of the 40th Precinct.
Both officers, a male and a female, had been on the job for two years, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says. They were on a vertical patrol with a third officer in a stairwell when they encountered two people.
One of the people they encountered allegedly shot the officers. That person was let into a seventh-floor apartment. When police entered the apartment, they say they discovered that suspect had apparently committed suicide.
Police say they recovered a handgun and a shotgun from the apartment.
Police say they are questioning several other people in connection with the shooting, including the second person who was in the stairwell.
PBA President Pat Lynch called on the public to report illegal guns to help prevent future shootings.
Police say both officers are able to speak and communicate.
