Two Litchfield High School students were killed and three others were seriously hurt in a fiery crash in Torrington early this morning.
Police say all five were in a car together when it veered off the road, hit a tree, then went down an embankment into a wooded area and caught fire.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. on Town Farm Road in Torrington near the Litchfield line. Police say three of the teens were able to get out of the car and two were able to run for help. They banged on a door and that homeowner called 911.
First responders say the car was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Matthew Rousseau and Thomas Graveline were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other 16-year-old boys and a 14-year-old girl are being treated at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. One of them needed to be airlifted.
Police say they're looking at whether speed contributed to the crash, but they are still investigating.
“They were coming from Litchfield. We don’t know where they were headed to. Again, that’s all part of this investigation right now. We will determine that as the days go on,” says Chief Bill Baldwin, of the Torrington Police Department.
Litchfield's superintendent of schools released a statement that said in part, "I ask at this time you take a moment and offer a prayer, or positive thoughts, for our students, their families, and our community, as it experiences a difficult situation."
Counseling services are being offered this afternoon and evening for anyone who may need it.
