Advocates say a new state law designed to combat hunger in Connecticut is off to a strong start.

State Rep. David Michel of Stamford says the law will establish "the Office of the Food Access Advocate."

"The bill basically describes a position within the CWCSEO, which is the Commission for Women, Children, Seniors, Equity & Opportunity. Commissioner Steven Hernandez welcomes that position and we're very excited that the bill passed this year through the budget,” said Rep. Michel.

The goal of the legislation is to bring grocery stores to areas known as "food deserts" across the state, according to Michel.
