People in Fairfield came together Thursday night to remember those who have died from addiction.

The Fairfield Cares Community Coalition held its annual overdose awareness day vigil, at the Sherman Town Green.

The evening also celebrated those in recovery.

There was music and speeches and various organizations handed out resources.

Organizers say it's important for people to know having substance use disorder is nothing to be ashamed of.

"So often people don't get the help and treatment they need because they are ashamed, because of the stigmatized having a substance use disorder. But it is a disease just like so many other diseases and we want people not to hesitate to get the treatment and support they need," said Cathy Hazlett, program director with Fairfield Cares Community Coalition.

The coalition conducts Narcan trainings on the second Thursday of every month, which takes place at Fairfield Woods Branch Library, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
