Torrington police say residents should be aware of scam where people pose as officers and try to get money from victims.

Police said victims are told that they are wanted or have unpaid parking tickets.

Officials said scammers threaten those victims with arrest if they don't pay a penalty or fine.

In a statement, police said, "No legitimate law enforcement agency or government body would demand payment in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency, through gift cards, nor would they ask for any credit card or bank information. If you receive such a request, it's likely a scam. Hang up the phone."
