The American Red Cross held a blood drive to benefit a former Norwalk police detective battling cancer Saturday.

In January, Mark Edwards, a father of two, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. Edwards has since received numerous blood transfusions.

Edwards retired from the department in 2014 after 28 years of service. He is now a lieutenant with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Over 50 people donated blood during the drive, held at Norwalk City Hall.

Another blood drive will be held on Aug. 15 at Saint Ann's Club.
