'More light.' Fairfield displays first public menorah in town history
Local organization says it will stay up for all of December.
One town in Connecticut says it is dedicated to amplifying love this holiday season.
The Fairfield Jewish Advocacy Coalition says the town will finally have a public menorah for all to see.
“This is one of 15,000 public menorahs in our country," FJAC co-founder Lauren Field says. "Because of the rise in antisemitism and hate, there’s more of a need now for light and love, and peace and unity, and inclusion."
Christmas and the first day of Hanukkah fall on the same day this year, and Laurie Renzulli says the menorah will remain up until the end of December.
“We are so grateful that there is hope in so much darkness," Renzulli says. "And this year more than ever, we look forward to more light."
Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber says the town’s strength lies in diversity and inclusion, and sharing the holiday season with all residents adds to the joy.
“I think the menorah is going to be an incredible symbol that we’re all in this together," Rabbi Shlame Landa, of Chabad of Fairfield says. "There’s space for everyone, and we’re very grateful for this opportunity."
The menorah will be officially lit alongside the town's Christmas tree this Saturday night.
