Gerber's wife is planning a public memorial service for her late husband on Friday at the Martire Family Arena at Sacred Heart University.

Gov. Ned Lamont expressed his sorrow Thursday.

"He was a good friend, great first selectman. I called him right before he went in for the operation and he said he'd be back fighting for the people of Fairfield by the end of the month," Lamont said. "He was very optimistic and positive. We are going to miss him dearly"

The town clerk said the Board of Selectmen plans on discussing a replacement for Gerber next Wednesday at its board meeting.

She says they have until Aug. 15 to announce the new Democratic first selectman to finish out Gerber's term.
